it’s the little things | celebrating.

It’s been a while, but I’m joining the “It’s the Little Things” link up party with Lindsay over at Hello Hue again!  & boy, do I need this today.  Now that it’s August, I’m facing what all teachers dread…the end of summer.  I’ve tried to diminish the blow by mentally preparing and spending some time in my office to prepare for the fall.

I need to keep things in perspective.  Just because summer is coming to a close doesn’t mean that I can’t still enjoy life like I do in July & August!  In fact, now that I’m done with my masters degree, I should have much more time to celebrate each day by letting simple things bring a smile to my face & heart, no matter how busy things get.  So for this week’s link up, I have decided to celebrate the simple things that have brought me some joy!

1 | companies with some heart.

As many of you know, I am really active on twitter.  I have also recently begun getting back into the swing of a healthy lifestyle after about a year off.  Well, it turns out that General Electric has a health initiative in which they encourage people to live more healthy lifestyles.  They connected with me on twitter after seeing a tweet about a healthy dish I had just prepared.  In response, they sent me this wonderful tray of healthy goodies in the mail!

It was nice to get a little gift without much expectation.  Obviously they want positive PR, but I didn’t have to do anything to get this.  It was a sweet gesture!  If you want to stay in touch with what they are doing, they have a #healthyshare hashtag on twitter.

2 | bringing a little joy home.

I got these lillies the other day.  No reason, other than the fact that I wanted something pretty at home. :)

3 | learning.

I love to learn about new things whenever I can.  I often say I’d be an eternal student if I could afford it!  Kira over at Her New Leaf posted this great list of books about blogging.  I purchased “Blogging for Creatives.”  A lot of the first few chapters have been things I already knew, but now I’m about 3/4 of the way through and I’m learning a lot about ways to connect with other readers and how to ensure you post good content.  It’s been a really fun read!

4 | fun glasses.

I’ve been wanting to do the free 5 day home try-on from Warby Parker for a while, but finally dove in and ordered some frames last week.  I ordered some that I knew would be way too hipster for me, just for fun.  I enjoyed trying on the different glasses.  I’m not sure that I’m ready to dive in a purchase a pair yet–maybe after another home trial. :)

5 | garden progress.

My second set of tomatoes are almost ready to be eaten!  I also have several new jalepeno peppers.  I think my garlic will be ready for harvesting sometime really soon.  It’s all very exciting for a foodie like me!

6 | feeling great!

I’ve been faithful about hitting the gym for the past two weeks, and I already feel so amazing!  I can feel that my clothes fit me better already.  Now that I’m back, I can’t imagine how I went so long without consistently working out.  It always makes me feel good about myself.  I’m enjoying my new weight lifting routine.  I can’t wait to see how my body continues to change over the next few months!

What little things are you celebrating this week?

How are you bringing a little more joy into your days?

  1. Hi Katie! Thanks for linking up with me today! I love your list of little things! I bet those glasses are super cute on you! I’ve toyed with doing a home trial with some, but like you, feel like I’d be trying too hard/looking a little too hipster. ;)

Hope you have a great weekend, girl!

Hi Lindsay! Thanks for stopping by & hosting the link up! :) The glasses were super fun, but like you said–most of them just made me look like I was trying too hard to be a college hipster again. :)

The book is really nice so far–can’t wait to finish it. I’ve also got another one on the way with tips for taking great photos. I’m especially psyched for that one!

Hope you have a lovely weekend too! Sending positive energy your way in the hopes that your precious baby boy decides to make an appearance soon! :)

  2. Oh! And that blogging book looks like it’d be chock full of good stuff! Interested to see how you like it once you finish!

hi there. popping over from the little things link up.

those lillies are beautiful and those frames are awesome!!!! i have never heard of this home try on program and i must look into right now. thanks for sharing!

    • Katie says:

Hi Elizabeth, thanks so much for stopping by! :) The frames were really fun. It’s such a neat program–my sister told me about it. She got a pair of glasses from them. Compared to most places where you can buy prescription glasses, Warby Parker is pretty cheap!

Ah! Thank you for posting about those glasses. Mine broke the other day and I need to call about getting new ones RIGHT NOW. haha I would have forgotten. I’ve been wearing my first ever pair of glasses from 9th grade because I lost my other ones.
Little things = FINALLY HAVING A BED!! haha. Being raised a foot and a half off the ground. It makes a difference. For real. Also, it making me feel like an adult AND, Lobster loves it because she has something to hide under now. :)

    • Katie says:

Bummer for breaking your glasses. :( But getting new ones is fun too! My eyes are getting worse & worse & I’m trying to accept the fact that I will probably have to wear glasses more often this year. I don’t really like the ones I have anymore, so I’m slowly trying to find a pair that I like…I say slowly because I don’t want to have to embrace the fact that I have to wear them more often. Haha.

YAY BED! haha. it’s funny how little things like that can make you feel like an adult. But I’m sad Lobster has a place to hide from me now…

I want hipster glasses; the only thing I love about hipster culture. Did the Warby Parker thing last fall, couldn’t pull the trigger to make the purchase because I wanted them all! Thanks for the reminder, doing it again now. Also? Thanks for the reminder to celebrate the simple things and put it all in perspective. Would you post that every day please? ;-)

    • Katie says:

Nice! I like hipster glasses too. :) I used to be quite a hipster in college. A hardcore hipster–lip pierced, dyed my black hair EVEN MORE BLACK (haha), etc, etc. It’s funny to think about it now because my style has totally changed! Now I just like pretty dresses & curly hair.

I love doing the little things link up because it makes me look around at all that I have and should be thankful for. Isn’t it all to easy to forget how lucky we are? It’s nice to pause & take it all in every now & then. :)

I love that you have a garden! I’ve been thinking of starting one for a while now and I need to just bit the bullet and go plant some seeds! ;) Those lilies are gorgeous, I love just treating yourself to something new and unexpected every once in a while. Great post!

    • Katie says:

Thanks, Ashley! :) I think that with garden, you do just have to dive right in…once you invest in pots, it’s actually a pretty cheap hobby! :)
